On April 1st, Melanie and I left for Hawaii (yup, Hawaii again!) with the Logan High School Choir who were to perform as part of Hawaii's 50th year anniversary of statehood.
First at Pearl Harbor (at the USS Missouri - the ship on which the treaty to end WWII was signed):
Then at the State Capitol:
The choir headed home on Monday, April 6th, but not the Hicken Family! Melanie and I (with Shelley and Hillary Dodd in tow) ditched the choir on Sunday and met the men-folk portion of our families (and the Rohwer's) on Maui for our official spring break excursion! Tough duty, I know, but someone has to help stimulate the economy!
This was the horrible view out of our first floor, twenty steps to the pool, Marriott condo.
With the beach a mere 100 steps further than the pool, we had a BLAST!
(The island you see behind the kids is Lanai.)
We only had one rainy day. So we chose that day to head up to the top of the dormant volcano - Haleakala. It was freezing! And we had a great view (NOT)!! But we can say we were there! At the TOP!
Greg and Dustin learned to kite surf. We played in the ocean. We played in the pool. We ate--continually. We washed sandy and salty clothes. We played some more. We toured. We shopped. We ate--continually, remember. We watched movies. We had a fabulous family home evening lesson presented by the teenagers. We played the fruit game. The men ate sushi (eating again). The women and girls got toe rings (can you believe I succumbed to the peer pressure?). We shopped some more (and more, and more). And, we ate!
We just plain enjoyed our time with our fabulous friends!
I feel so blessed to have such great friends with whom to vacation. They are easy and fun to be around and add so much to our lives. Thanks for going with us, Dodd and Rohwer families!
P.S. What are we doing for spring break next year? If you plan it, we will come!
